Enhance Letterboxd’s community and personalization by adding a feature that allows users to follow your favourite artists (actors directors, studios, cinemas, etc), enabling deeper engagement and discovery.

Conducted competitive research, surveys, and interviews to identify gaps in user engagement. Discovered users pain paints are missing updates about favourite creators and rely on time-consuming searches.

Based on user research, the persona is a movie enthusiast who sees films as a personal escape and enjoys discussing them with friends. They seek to discover new directors to stay connected and deepen their love for cinema.

The empathy map highlights the user's frustration with scattered sources for discovering new directors and missing updates. It emphasizes their desire for a centralized, social platform to stay connected with friends and explore their shared passion for films effortlessly.

Information Architecture:

Based on research findings, we used "How Might We" statements to prioritize features and address user frustrations, pain points, and insights from tree testing.

Defined the solution by identifying key features—enhancing social connections, centralizing movie updates, and implementing notifications—based on user needs and competitor insights. This ensures a focused approach to improving engagement and staying competitive.

The user flow accommodates different mental models by providing multiple pathways to access the "Notify About a New Movie" feature. Whether navigating from their homepage, profile, or discovery pages, users can intuitively stay updated on new releases from their followed directors or actors.

Conducted mid-fi usability testing with 6 target audience users, aligning with research and personas, to validate the flow of the new feature. Based on feedback, refined and revised the feature to better meet user needs.

Usability testing demonstrated strong ease of navigation and a high success rate, with minimal misclicks, validating both the design and functionality of the feature.


Users expressed enthusiasm for the feature, confirming its potential to enhance their experience and deepen their connection to the Letterboxd community.
